Gorsfraith Brenin
1997 - 2022
It is with a very heavy heart that Trevoulter Barton Stud announces the sudden death at the age of 25 years of its internationally famous Welsh Section D stallion Gorsfraith Brenin. In the words of his devoted owner Kerensa Cobbledick:
’He was the Brad Pitt of the sports pony breeding world and now there is a hole in our stallion lines that will never be filled.’
Arriving at the stud as a barely handled weanling in 1998, he remained there for the rest of his life, taking up stud duties in 2001 and only retiring from them in 2019. From the very start, he was extremely popular with mare owners, initially across the West Country and then – following his very successful appearance at the SPSS Stallion Grading in 2003 where he was champion – across the country. A very modern type of Section D (by Clyngim Deryn Du out of Estow Bernadette, and therefore a grandson of the Section D show jumping stallion Derwen Replica, with such iconic names as Nebo Black Majic, Brenin Dafydd and Parc Welsh Flyer close up in his pedigree -- his extravagant paces and outstanding natural jump attracted an impressive book of mares, with some mare owners sending as many as 10 mares to him on a regular basis each season.
As the sire of nearly 150 foals across several studbooks his offspring includes the graded stallions Trevoulter Ladies Man (who also competed at international JA level and was a winner at HOYS) and Trevoulter Brennex, the BEF high 1st Premium winners Trevoulter Hot Totty, Trevoulter Bremmingh, Trevoulter Brenippy and the successful dressage pony Trevoulter Silver Replica as well as the highly graded mares Trevoulter Silver Arrow, showjumpers Trevoulter Mega Mix and Trevoulter Silver Arrow and the working hunter ponies Trevoulter Rebel and Brenin’s Primo Boy. Trevoulter Mr Darcy and Trevoulter Silver Express were also two of his many winners in the show ring. Successes such as these were garlanded with rankings as the Leading BEF pony sire in 2006 and 2007 and the SPSS Dancer medal in 2007 amongst a number of other national wards.
As Kerensa says of her adored stallion – appropriately labelled the King of Trevoulter, Brenin being the word for King in Welsh – he was such a big personality. ‘He loved an audience and right up until the end he would march past his row of mares without so much as a glimpse, just to stay in the limelight’. Gorsfraith Brenin also had a direct personal effect on Kerensa’s life. ‘I have made many valued friends through people who admired and used him’ she says, ‘I almost certainly wouldn’t have met these special like-minded people if it wasn’t for them asking to use Brenin or buying his offspring’ for this and the wonderful memories I am forever thankful to him.
A remarkable pony, a remarkable sire of outstanding sports ponies and a great loss to sports pony breeding in the UK.
